Water dripping ceaselessly
Will fill the four seas.
Specks of dust
Not wiped away
Will become the
Five mountains.

Umberto said so…

Terrorism [is] a biological consequence of the multinationals, just as a day of fever is the reasonable price of an effective vaccine . . . The conflict is between great powers, not between demons and heroes. Unhappily, therefore, is the nation that finds the “heroes” underfoot, especially if they still think in religious terms and involve the population in their bloody ascent to an uninhabited paradise.
— Umberto Eco “Striking at the Heart of the State” (1978) from Travels in Hyperreality

Mass Communications is dead! Long Live Mass Communications!

Posted by upoytao on July 27, 2005

earlier i was sent a questionnaire by my university professors. it is a study about the viability of the mass comm program in light of employment of new graduates. the study is being conducted by two teachers of the said program one is a really very intelligent teacher while the other is a pretentious son of a bitch.

but anyway the study is somewhat intelligent in the sense that it tries to ask its strong point and its weak points in its curriculum. the study is a slap in the face for the division as well as an eye opener for critical minds who would want the program to grow and develop.

i answered the questionnaire and find it very enlightening at the same time disturbing.

because it affirmed my worst fear of seeing the division where i came from slowly degenerating that it came to a point that they even have to create a study just to support its viability in the employment race.

it is sad to note however that a very large block of my batchmates are either unemployed or underemployed.

look at the classified ads of newspapers every sunday and you’ll see that a lot of companies do not look for mass comm graduates.

the sadder part of it is that most of my batchmates dont dare work in the media.

as for me i have my own reasons why.

my bias arises from the problem of principle and the way they treat their employees.

aside from the very minimal amount of pay and the hazard the job offers, regularization would wait up until seven freakin years!

as if the media practitioner has no family to raise and a table to fill.

still i saw in media the most intelligent and most responsible people who offers self sacrifice. some dont even marry just to be able to report the situation of the country.

that is where i began to feel disillusioned in media.

its main task became just that of reporting while in fact it is to shape public opinion.

but anyway thats another story.

i just hope that these old teachers of mine find what they are looking for and not just pass this paper of theirs afterwards just gather dust in the university shelves…

as most academic papers do, and well as most newspapers are meant to be…

how ironic.
