Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

B2: madami akong kilalang nagtuturo ng ibang subject pero iba natapos nila and yet they are doing good in it.

B1: eh baka sila yun? eh ikaw?

an exchange of letters…

Posted by upoytao on February 27, 2007

Dear Fellow Frustrated Filipino,

First of I want to thank you for doing a lot for our country and our future generation.
I also have nothing against filipinos going out of the country. If you feel that you’ve done a lot for our country in such that you believe you cannot do anything else then you have my blessing.

after reading your letter i would like to share my stand and perhaps share some of my frustrations.
Even when i was a student i’ve been active in politics and ive been actively seeking for reforms in the country.
even after graduating i worked for an NGO handling the debts by former tyrant Marcos, in cebu.

After coming back to manila i worked for an NGO for human rights, and the picture one could paint after on the sanctity of human life could be no more than a youth tortured and buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in the mountains.

come edsa 1 and edsa 2 and edsa 3, come election 2004 and now 2007. I have more than enough grudges to say that we have every right to leave our country.

but i realized that the reason our country do not prosper is when filipinos don’t do anything about it and let these “leaders” handle their lives.

we were given our freedom but we don’t know what to do with it.
we were given our laws but we don’t even know about it.
we were given our brains but we don’t think for our country.

people say the only way evil can triumph is for good people to do nothing.
perhaps it should’ve been “evil in our country triumphs because good people would rather leave it.”

a call for a better life has always been a great temptation.
only a few would regret not to embrace such endeavors.

but that few are like you and me who knows what is the problem and are willing to sacrifice for it.

if people think that the answer to their problems is voting a candidate then so be it.
if people think that the only way to save our democracy is keep GMA in power then so be it.
But we have to face the consequences, be more responsible for our actions. By keeping GMA in power we keep a monolithic icon of cheat and more extra judicial killings.
By supporting an election under her we give her more reason to cheat and take away our votes.

I think that the problem lies, when we give up on our country.
when we rather run away from the challenges presented to us by God.

perhaps we should never choose the right leaders.
perhaps we should choose the right actions first.

shine on!

Dear Fellow Filipino,

Good day to all of you! Before I begin my letter… just a disclaimer, for people who know me they know that I love the Philippines very much and I am not really one who rants and complaints to high heavens about what is happening to our country and does nothing about it, in fact, I feel that at my relatively young age of 27, I have done much service to the Philippines by setting up Pathways to Higher Education which has sent more than 500 poor but deserving students to college and AHON Foundation which has already built two public elementary school libraries that have benefitted more than 3,500 students. Yet, after seeing how events in our nation have transpired the past few weeks and talking with some friends, I feel the urge to share with you my own thoughts and feelings.

Over the weekend, we saw the completion of two major political alliances for this coming Senate Elections that has just began here in the Philippines. Now we have two political forces with familiar faces nonetheless on opposite sides of the fences. On one end, you have Tito Sotto and Tessie Aquino-Oreta who were two major stalwarts of the opposition and the FPJ Campaign in 2004 hobnobbing with the woman (Pres. GMA) whom they claimed to have cheated FPJ in the last Presidential Elections. On the other side of the fence, you see Manny Villar, the former house speaker who was actually responsible for impeaching Erap now part of the United Opposition who is led by no less than… Erap himself. Now if you don’t see anything wrong with this picture then you must be one of the many Filipinos who have accepted this very sad reality that there is indeed no permanent ideals that our government leaders stand up for but rather they just go where there self-interests can best be served. It is this kind of politics why I no longer wonder why good people like Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Mayor Jesse Robredo of Naga City or outstanding Bulacan Governor Josie Dela Cruz will find it hard or worse, never be elected to national positions.

It is with these in mind that I’d like to share with you what are events this coming May elections that will make me consider leaving the Philippines:

1.) If former COMELEC Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano of Hello Garci fame wins in his bid to become Congressman of Bukidnon…seeking to replace a good man no less in incumbent Cong. Neric Acosta… We would really be the laughing stock of the whole world if we allow a man with the reputation of Garci to be one of our so called “Honorable Gentlemen”.

2.) If Dancing Queen Tessie Aquino Oreta reclaims her seat at the Senate… I hope that all of us would still remember that dance that she did during the 2001 impeachment hearings after they voted to overrule the decision of then Chief Justice Davide… let us make sure that people like her never make it to the Senate again.

3.) If Richard Gomez becomes a senator… what does he know about making laws? We already have the likes of Bong Revilla and Lito Lapid in the Senate and their performance or lack of it would be reason enough not to elect another actor who has no prior experience in government to the distinguished halls of the Senate.

4.) If Gringo Honasan wins again…. have we not learned our lesson? I cannot believe that just because someone is charismatic then we will just elect him to become one of our senators despite the fact that he has time and again caused so much instability in our country… if we want a military junta similar to that of Thailand … then lets all vote for this guy….

5.) If Manny Pacquiao becomes Congressman of General Santos City… everybody loves Manny the Boxing Champ but Manny the Lawmaker? Lets be realistic here, Manny is our Hero alright but I think it takes more than just great boxing skills and a desire to serve to be able to make appropriate laws that would help uplift the lives of the many Filipinos who live in Poverty.

6.) If Lito Lapid wins for Mayor of Makati City… I don’t like Jojo Binay as well but Lito Lapid as city mayor of the country’s finance and business center?!?! And do you really think he is from Makati and has good plans for the city? The Arroyos asking someone like him to run just goes to show you how much love and concern this government has for our country.

7.) If Chavit Singson becomes a Senator, Illegal Gambling = Chavit… enough said.

Now if all of these 7 things happen during this coming elections then don’t be surprised if I decide to leave this country that I love dearly. Like I said during the first part of my letter, I feel that I have done much for this country but I think its time that Filipinos become more vigilant and critical in selecting our leaders for the sake of our future and the generations that will go beyond us. So I appeal to every Filipino who asks what can I actually do for my country… Choose and vote for the right people this coming elections, huwag na tayong magpaloko sa mga kandidatong maganda lang ang jingle o gwapo lang sa mga poster. Let us choose leaders who have a good track record for service and who are genuinely committed towards serving our country.

Thank you very much for your time in reading this letter.

Sincerely,

Harvey S. Keh

Nasa Atin Ang Panahon

Posted by upoytao on February 27, 2007

terror what?

Posted by upoytao on February 24, 2007

hi rizalist!

just a question.

if a farmer had a dying son/daughter because of poverty and his land was taken away from him by landlords through violence and his son/daughter died along with his wife. he asked help from the police but he didn’t get them. he eventually joined the CPP-NPA because he saw them fighting for the lands of farmers and defending them from the goons of landlords. DOES THAT MAKE HIM A TERRORIST?

Or perhaps consider this a muslim community has no access to proper education and healthcare they tried to ask for help but the government wont give them any because the money that was supposed to be used for it were in the hands of government sponsored politicians. The people eventually realized that they cannot get any help from the government and decided to take their fate in their own hands. The government looked at it as rebellion and launched a full scale attack on them. the people joined the MNLF or the MILF because they saw these people protecting them from these landlords and military soldiers. NOW DOES THAT MAKE THEM TERRORISTS?

your definition that “TERRORISM is organized crime in the service of a definite political and ideological goal to overthrow, supplant or prevent the formation of democratic regimes.” clearly doesn’t match the experiences of these people.

perhaps “TERRORISM is not empowering the people through education and access to health services and their civil liberties amongst others their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”

now please don’t give me that reason again that these are just the consequences of a democracy where people loose some or win some. one way or the other some people would carry the cudgels of violence inflicted upon them may it be cultural or experiential and believe me when i say that a hungry heart yearning for a better life is more than willing to slay than a hungry stomach.

Perhaps you would agree with me that when your life is at risk it is never a crime to defend it and die for it.

This is the path I usually walk on towards my boarding house in cebu.
Sometimes I ask myself if coming back was all worth it after all the pain and now I’m again unemployed.

I mean I could’ve looked for another job there.

I don’t know… cebu was too lonely for me to begin with and my reasons for staying there had long disappeared…

wala lang nakakamiss ang cebu haay…

i posted this pic because i suddenly remembered my room where i once cry and think about the worthlessness of life, or maybe the worthlessness of my life.

in that room na puros kalungkutan pero ok lang.

medyo nakakamiss lang talaga haay…

To suffer thy NGO…

Posted by upoytao on February 23, 2007

Well its official I’m now Officially unemployed again!
apparently the NGO I work in has no more funding.
I don’t want to go further into details but I really enjoyed working for this NGO.

for one this NGO is unique very unique to say the most

I guess the prospect of having another corporate job just looms over the horizon.
yesss a new job and a new life again. (gollums voice)

this week might be my last week with the NGO and i think ill spend the rest of it reminiscin and talking about it or maybe writing about it also…

pakengshet na globe!

Posted by upoytao on February 16, 2007

I’m a globe sunscriber.

——————–

Nine things to do between now and Feb. 14: MAG-CYBERCAMPAIGN TAYO, MGA KA-TEXT!

Many of our friends still don’t know about our boycott and our protests to compel Globe to rollback the unlimited texting rates of P15, P25 and P50 for one, two and five days.

Ang kalaban natin ngayon ay lack of information, disinformation, misinformation. If we all forget, we will be surrendering our rights. But if we spread the good news of fighting for our consumer rights, that’s a big help in achieving victory.

We thus urge all of you to HELP SPREAD THE NEWS by doing any of the following:

1. PM all your friends on Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, AIM, GTalk and other IMs to “FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS AS CONSUMERS! FIGHT FOR UNLIMITXT ROLLBACK! GO TO TXTPOWER.ORG TO SIGN PETITION. AND DON’T FORGET TO BOYCOTT GLOBE.” Pinoy IRC channel moderators are usually supportive of posting such a pro-consumer message on their channels.

2. Whether you are a Globe, Smart or Sun subscriber, send the same message to all your phonebook contacts. If you’re on Unlitxt, 258 or 24/7: text all your friends on the same network. Smart and Sun subscribers are consumers too, and they deserve to know what Globe is doing.

3. Copy, paste and email the “Boycott Globe!” statement and the link to the online petition to all your friends. Nearly 5,000 have signed the petition, and we are sure more will do the same if they get information about it.

4. Add or make “Boycott Globe! Sign petition for Unlimitxt rollback at protest banner on your MySpace and Friendster pages, and your blogs.

6. If you’re a blogger, blog about our campaign. Feel free to quote TXTPower statement.

7. If you’re a blog reader, ask your favorite blogger to use our campaign as a topic.

8. Call radio stations and write letters to the newspaper editors about the issue, and why consumers’ right are important. If you’re a student, ask the editor of your student paper to publish our “Boycott Globe!” statement.

9. Wait for the final announcement on what we will do on Feb. 14, the next meeting called by the NTC in the agency’s attempt to amicably settle the dispute. We will have a different kind of event on that date that, hopefully, you will join and enjoy. Of course, we ask you now in advance to spread the news about our Feb. 14 event as soon as the final details are in.

Salamat po!

Parang Tayo…..Pero Hindi

Posted by upoytao on February 15, 2007

She is a 24-year old copywriter. He is an architect. They met and became lovers in college. They broke up last year but remained to be “friends.”

They send sweet text messages and he calls her often to make sure she’s okay. They still date. They still have sex.

They don’t see anyone else. It is obvious that they still love each other but when asked about their situation, she doesn’t know the real score. Even her friends are in the dark. “Parang sila, pero hindi.”

She works in a telecom. He is reviewing for the board. They are in the same barkada. They talk on the phone till 4 am. He gives her chocolates, flowers and CDs even when there is no occasion. Their friends are suspecting something. Bakit sila nagsosolo kapag may overnight inuman? Why does he hold her close on the dance floor? Bakit sila magkaholding hands lagi?

Sila kaya?

“He hasn’t admitted anything,” she rants. “But I let him hug and kiss me. Parang kami, pero hindi.”

They work together in an ad agency. After office, they would watch movie, have dinner and stroll at Glorietta. She gave him Harry Potter books for his birthday in exchange for posing as her boyfriend to make an ex jealous. They made out during the company outing in Subic and never talked about it.

He said “I love you” once but she wasn’t sure if she heard him correctly because they were both drunk then. But one thing she is sure of is her feelings for him. She likes him. And she’s assuming that with what he’s doing to her and with her, he likes her, too. There’s just one hitch: he has a girlfriend!

She is a 28-year-old virgin. He’s a 35-year-old bachelor. Both mountaineers, they became close during their climbs. After a few dates in posh restaurants, he brings her to his condo where they would make out.

They have been doing this for months. She wants to believe that “sila na” but then she’s not really sure about it. “We don’t talk about it but it doesn’t really matter,” she’d tell her friends. “What’s important is I am enjoying this — whatever it is.”

The “parang kayo, pero hindi” stage. Others call it MU or mutual understanding. Pseudo-relationships. Pseudo- boyfriends.

Flings. Almost like a relationship, but not quite. It is a phase where the persons involved are more than friends, but not quite lovers.

Puwedeng may verbal agreement, puwedeng wala. One or both of you may have admitted your feelings, possible ding hindi. You just let your gestures do the talking for you.

This kind of “relationship” can happen at different stages for different reasons. It can happen after a break-up. You still love each other, and you want to be with each other but you broke up for a reason. A nd for reasons that you alone know, ayaw niyo na muna magkabalikan.

It can also happen before a relationship, iyong pareho kayong nakikiramdam.

This pseudo-relationship stage, for a time, can be fun.

Iba’t ibang dahilan. Puwedeng for fun lang.

Puwedeng “buti na iyan kesa wala” or puwede na iyang “pantawid-gutom.”

Meaning, habang wala pa iyong the real thing, doon muna sa kunwa-kunwarian.

For those who are not in a serious relationship, they would think that pseudo-relationship is better than no relationship at all. It would be fun, if all you are after for is that “kilig” feeling.

Aminado naman ako na once upon a time, may mga pseudo-relationships din ako. No commitments involved. For the simplest reason that they couldn’t commit, because they were either committed to someone else, or that they weren’t ready to commit.

My rationalization, “okay na iyun, kesa wala.”

Iyong merong laging kasama. Habang wala pa ang the real thing, puwede na itong pagtiyagaan.

But then I learned that although it was only a pseudo-relationship, the emotions were real. And usually, in this kind of set up, ang babae lagi ang lugi.

Una, you can’t ask him to commit. Since it’s not really a relationship, you can’t demand commitment from your partner. Ano ba kayo? You will always be uncertain about your role in his life. You can’t expect him to be always there with you. And if you feel jealous of the other girls, you just have to keep it to yourself.

Ano ka ba niya para magselos?

Pangalawa, what if you fall deeply in love with him? You can’t be sure if he feels the same way.

Even if you are dying to tell him you love him, you can’t. Because you’re not sure if he’ll like it. Baka mapahiya ka lang.

This stage will always make you wonder where you are in the relationship.

Or if there is a relationship at all.

Pangatlo, what if you become attached too much?

What if you have invested all your emotions and this man hasn’t?

What if you remain faithful to him, not entertaining other guys, only to find out that he is seeing other girls?

Isa pang downside ng pseudo-relationships, it is fleeting. When a disagreement sets in, or when one of you gets cold, then that would be the end of it. Unlike in a serious relationship, hindi mo alam kung saan ka lulugar sa isang pseudo-relationship. Wala kang pinanghahawakan.

Kasi sa pseudo-relationship, there is no “us.” Meron lang “you and me,” hindi “us.”

Real pain. And usually, kahit tapos na ang pseudo- relationship, hindi mo maiwasan umasang one day, may karugtong pa rin iyun. And you will be miserable, hoping to bring back what you used to have, only to find out eventually that the guy is in another pseudo-relationship with somebody else.

Ang hirap, ano? You agreed to this kind of set up for fun and then you’d end up hurting yourself in the process.

Pero puwede naman maiwasan ang pain eh. Puwede naman na hindi mo muna isipin ang future and just enjoy the feeling, without thinking of the consequences.

But if you are certain that you are going to hurt yourself in the process, kailangan mo mamili. You can be happy and live the moment without worrying what would happen next. Or you can stop settling with pseudo-relationships and wait for the real thing.

When I was younger and in a pseudo-relationship with an unavailable guy, a friend told me,

“Sige, kung ayaw mong magpapigil, bahala ka. Magpakasaya ka. Pero huwag kang iiyak-iyak pagkatapos, dahil tatadyakan kita.”

Ang bottom line lang naman, kung magpapasaya sa iyo, gawin mo.

Ihanda mo lang ang sarili mo sa consequence. Dahil ang “parang kayo pero hindi” stage ay bihirang nagiging totoo. Usually, hanggang doon lang siya …
